Japanese page is here

An image database file LEPISugitani is a specimen database based on butterfly and moth collection of the late Prof. Iwahiko Sugitani(1888-1971) of Daisan Koto-gakko (Third Upper School: Kyoto University at present). The collection was donated to the Entomological Laboratory of Kyushu University. Prof. Sugitani had taught mathematics at the school and also had studied and collected butterflies and moths. He constructed a valuable collection by field surveys in Taiwan, Sakhalin (Karafuto) and Korean Peninsula. Celastrina sugitanii (Lycaenidae, Japanese name: Sugitani-ruri-shijimi) discovered from Kibune, Kyoto City, Nacna sugitanii (Noctuidae, Sugitani-ao-kenmon), Perigrapha hoenei (Noctuidae, Sugitani-kiriga) etc. were dedicated to him as scientific or Japanese names.
Each record consists of 23 items such as scientific name, Japanese name, collecting locality, collecting date, collector, etc. including the images of each specimen and the label. The total number of specimens at present is 2,867 (late of February, 2018) and the other data will be opened in near future.

The LEPISugitani is managed by a text database management system SIGMA.

The LEPISugitani file is supported by a Grant-in-Aid for Publication of Scientific Research Results (Head Investigator: Toshiya Hirowatari) from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science.

The use of data in this database is free of charge if the objective is academic study or educational purposes.
